White House Conference on Wildlife Underway
posted October 2, 2008

The White House Conference on North American Wildlife Policy is underway and will continue through Friday in Reno, Nevada.

Although President Bush set the goal of the conference, the establishment of a ten year plan to improve wildlife conservation and boost hunting opportunities on public lands with his executive order Facilitation of Hunting Heritage and Wildlife Conservation issued in August 2007, Bush will not be attending the conference as originally announced.

Instead, Vice President Dick Cheney will be delivering the closing remarks on the conference on Friday.

The Conference has eight core topics: the perpetuation and strengthening of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation; management of wildlife and habitat at the state, tribal and federal levels; ensuring dependable funding for wildlife conservation; perpetuating hunter traditions through education, recruitment, and retention; maintaining access to public and private lands; coordinating oil and gas development and wildlife conservation; and the impacts of climate change on wildlife. Shortly after Cheney's closing remarks, a teleconference will be held to brief the national media on the specific actions taken during the meeting and the relevance to hunters and anglers throughout the country.

Participants in the teleconference will include Bob Model and Jeff Crane representing the Sporting Conservation Council, Assistant Secretary Lyle Laverty representing the U.S. Department of the Interior, Under Secretary Mark Rey representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Matt Hogan representing the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies and David Nomsen representing the American Wildlife Conservation Partners.
