Upcoming County School Events
posted October 4, 2008

Upcoming events in the Hamilton County Schools:

Monday, October 6, 10:00 a.m. – Spring Creek Elementary. A business in East Brainerd will present Spring Creek students and teachers a plaque to honor us for the celebration they had this last Monday for the father of our K child who returned from Iraq. They have one to give to the father also, but we don’t know if he will be able to be here on such short notice. The entire school will gather in the Cafetorium for the presentation.

Monday, October 6, 2:45/3:00 – Rivermont Elementary. North River Rotary will be giving out Thesauraus’ to 3rd graders and 5th graders. This is a direct gift to each student, not the school, that supports our goals of reading and language development.

October 6-10, Tyner Academy. Artist in Residence Charlie Newton will be working with Tamara Salter’s 2nd block art class all week. He is doing a presentation and talking about his work, and working directly with the students in an art workshop. The art produced will be displayed locally. This is made possible by a grant from Allied Arts.

Wednesday, October 8 – Hixson HS. College Day. A group of speakers and sessions all day for seniors in the theater. Sessions include information for seniors on ACT, financial aid, types of colleges, alternatives to college, how to schedule your college classes and special college-level software uses.

EVERGREEN: Ooltewah HS – 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. OHS boasts 4 commended students (meaning they were in the top 34,000 in 1.5million students who took the PSAT in October 2007. OHS also boasts a National Recognition Program Scholar in Chesea Mize. She is one of 5,000 students out of 20,000 Hispanic high school students nationwide who took the PSAT. These are in addition to the commended scholar at HHS (last week) and the two African American scholars (out of 1600 nationally) at CSAS.

EVERGREEN: Hixson HS students in Brinn Dalton’s leadership class have been tutoring struggling kids at Hixson MS. According to HMS principal Sandy Barnwell, these kids have been struggling in reading and have made dramatic improvements this semester. In fact, one student recently scored an 85 on an internal reading assessment.

EVERGREEN: Hamilton County High School. Voter registration. Of the 91 young adults at the adult high school, Christian Monroe, a Social Science teacher, has registered 68 (75%) to vote in the upcoming Nov. 4th presidential election. More detail in attached sheet. Students are also discussing candidate’s platforms and issues in Ms. Monroe’s Government and Economics classes. This is part of the national effort sponsored by the NRCCUA, where 100,000 students across the nation participated in a mock election. Students will also be engaged in civic activity on election day with some assisting with directions to polling places, giving parking instructions and assisting election personal at HCHS (which is a polling place) as needed.
