The Alpha Beta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha will hold its annual “Hats for Hope” event to benefit the Chattanooga Community Kitchen from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Sonic Drive-In on Highway 58.
A live remote by US101 will provide entertainment during the event while encouraging area residents to “come on out” and contribute to the cause. Warm clothing, coats, gloves, shoes, hats and socks; canned food and donations will be accepted.
Although the name “Hats for Hope” is a little misleading, it has a history. According to Alpha Beta philanthropic chairperson Ruth Lehman, the event originally began as a hat drive for children. It evolved over the years as people began to bring clothing that can be used by men, women and children. Ms. Lehman said the most requested item is socks.
A quick look at clothing items most needed at the Community Kitchen includes: socks, adult underwear, stretch knit gloves (one size fits all), coats, toboggans, jeans, shoes and bath towels. Canned vegetables, soups, coffee, peanut butter, jelly, grits and oatmeal top the list of needs in food.
