Coach Henry Moyo is beginning to feel good about his young Lee men's soccer team. They dominated the visiting Scots of Covenant College on Saturday evening and climbed back over the .500 mark (5-4-1) with a 2-0 victory on the Lee Soccer Field.
The victory is only Lee’s fourth in 20 meetings with the college from Lookout Mountain. According to coach Moyo, this could be the last meeting between the two long-time rivals. Moyo says the Scots plan to leave the NAIA and enter NCAA Division III athletic completion.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Lee broke open the defensive struggle in the 55th minute when freshman Mark Behan scored his sixth goal of the year on the first of two assists from another freshman, Nathan Brown. The Flames put a little extra icing on the victory cake in the 89th minute when freshman Jonathan Moody scored the first goal of his career.
“It is always good to get a win over a quality program like Covenant,” said Moyo. “Our young team played very good soccer again tonight. We are hoping this will give up some need confident going into a key conference game at Auburn-Montgomery next Saturday. We are playing like a hungry team right now.”
Moyo praised the effort of sophomore Moise Leonce, who he said is “really stepping up his game.” The coach noted it was good to have Chris Hennessey and Jamey Loucks playing near 100 percent again and dominating in the back. “Behan has found his stride and Nate (Brown) is working hard. His goals will come,” pointed out the Lee coach.
The Flames outshot the Scots 8-5 in a hard-hitting, first-half defensive battle. However, Moyo’s group outshot the visitors 11-0 in dominating the second 45 minutes. Lee had seven shots on goal and Covenant put three on target.
Covenant keeper John Edger helped keep the Scots close with four saves. Lee’s Luidgi Beauzile recorded a shutout with three saves. The Flames had eight corner kicks and Covenant was awarded three.
