A native of Herron, Il., he had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga area and was a member of Bible Way Baptist Church in Rossville.
Mr. Avery was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during Vietnam and was the recipient of several commendation medals. He was currently employed as a supervisor of security with Walden Security Company at Southern Cellulose in Alton Park and was preceded in death by his father, Arlie Avery.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Marcia Avery; children, Stephen and Stephanie Avery of Chattanooga; grandson, Aidan Avery; mother, Virginia Avery; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Dr. Vincent Estill officiating. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
