Kappa Delta Pi Honors Five Cleveland Educators

Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education, honored five local educators during the annual "Honor an Educator" program which promotes excellence in the teaching profession.

Those honored in this year's program were Angie Goodwill and Sonia Griffey from Blythe-Bower Elementary, Karrie Jones from Lake Forest Middle School, Nicole Nelson from Black Fox Elementary, and Becky Wood from Walker Valley High School.

Angie Goodwill is currently a Reading First literacy leader. She has previously taught K-6 grades. During her 15 years in the teaching profession, she has been named Building Level Teacher of the Year, has co-authored over $4 million in grants for Cleveland City Schools, and has presented at Tennessee State Title I conference, Virginia PALS conference, and Tennessee Reading First conferences. She is also a member of the International Reading Association.

Sonia Griffey is currently a Pre-K teacher at Blythe Bower Elementary School. She has been an educator for 20 years. She has previously served as a second and fourth-grade teacher and an instructor in the Lee University College of Education. She is involved with the Red Clay Reading Association and was awarded 2008 Teacher of the Year for Blythe- Bower.

Karrie Jones is a sixth grade reading teacher at Lake Forest Middle School where she has been a sixth-grade team leader for eight years. She has also coached cheerleading for four years and was a Lee University cooperating teacher. She is a member of the Tennessee Association of Middle Schools, and in April of 2006 she was awarded the Sunny 92.3 teacher of the month.

Nicole Nelson has been teaching for 13 years. She is currently a second-grade teacher at Black Fox Elementary and has previously been a fifth-grade, first-grade, and kindergarten teacher, reading recovery teacher, and reading coach. She has been awarded teacher of the month for Taylor Elementary, teacher of the year for Black Fox, Bradley County K-4, Southeast Regional K-4, and East Tennessee K-4. She has been a member of Charter Current, the Red Clay Reading Association, the International Reading Association, and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics.

Becky Wood has been teaching for 18 years and is currently a Spanish teacher and foreign language department head at Walker Valley High School. She has previously been an English/Spanish teacher at Trewhitt Junior High. She is a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and has been listed in the "Who's Who" for educators. She also serves as advisor for the National Honor Society at Walker Valley.
