9-Year Old Storyteller Tells Spooky Tales Saturday Part Of Creative Discovery Museum Spooky Days posted October 8, 2008
At the Museum's Spooky Days celebration on Saturday, Hannah will tell spooky stories for children under the big tent on the Museum's roof top at 2 p.m. Other spooky fun from 1-4 p.m. includes arts activities and hot cider and s'mores. Children and families can also watch an expert pumpkin carving demonstration from 1-3 p.m. Throughout October, Creative Discovery Museum celebrates children's literacy and storytelling with its first annual Spooky Days event. Every Saturday in October, families can enjoy activities, refreshments and a different spooky storyteller every Saturday. Hannah Smyth will tell three stories written for her by her mother and father, including her version of Hansel and Gretel told from the Witch's perspective. "The witch felt like she was mistreated," said Hannah's mother Mimi Gerber. "Here are these kids who come trespassing on her property and start eating her house." She will also tell "A Spider Named Sid" and "Rattle Rattle, Shake Shake," an interactive poem about two children who dare each other to enter a graveyard. She passes out rattles to the audience who use them to make ghostly sounds. According to her mother, Hannah started storytelling two years ago in first grade. "She was tapped as the witch in a play and my shy child stole the show," said Mimi Gerber. "So I wrote her a story to perform at her school's annual storytelling festival. She did wonderfully and found out she really enjoyed it. The following year we entered her into the National Storytelling Showcase in Pigeon Forge. Only 20 youths in the country were selected to perform, and she was the youngest." Fall and winter hours through Feb. 28, 2009 are Monday through Friday (except Wednesday) from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday noon - 5 p.m., closed Wednesday. Tickets are $8.95 for children and adults. Creative Discovery Museum is located at 321 Chestnut Street in downtown Chattanooga. For more information, call 756-2738. |
