UTC's Dr. Richards Is Awarded Federal Research Grant
posted October 8, 2008

UTC'
s Dr. Sean Richards, Associate Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences, has received $379,355 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to conduct research on the cause of low birth weight of infants born in Hamilton County.

Richards and his team will be testing a hypothesis that low birth weight is correlated with heavy metal exposure. Richards will collaborate with Erlanger Medical Center, the UT College of Medicine and nationally recognized experts to analyze placentas from more than 1,000 low and normal birth weight children for concentrations of metals. Dr. David Adair, Professor and Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the UT College of Medicine, and Dr. Steven Symes, UTC Associate Professor of Chemistry, will play an integral part as Co-Investigators in this project.
