Lady Mocs Volleyball To Take On Wofford And Furman
posted October 10, 2008

Coming off a mid-week loss to Samford on Wednesday, the Chattanooga volleyball team will look to get back on the right track against Wofford and Furman as they wrap up a string of five straight conference games at home.

The Lady Mocs (8-11/3-2) are currently 2-1 on the current homestand after capturing wins against Appalachian State and Western Carolina last weekend. The team will open up the two-day stretch on Saturday against Wofford (11-8/1-3), who is coming off back-to-back losses to UNC Greensboro and Elon.

On the season the Terriers are hitting .211 and average 12.4 kills per set. The Wofford offense is led by Shanna Hughes, who puts down 3.5 kills per set. Joanna Sudduth is the team’s primary setter, as the junior averages 9.35 assists, good for third in the Southern Conference.

On defense, Wofford relies on Brittany Thompson, who averages 4.93 digs per set. Thompson is second only to Chattanooga’s Lara Newberry in that category. All time, the Mocs led the series with Wofford 19-2 and haven’t lost to the Terriers since the 2004 season. First serve for the contest with the Terriers is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Maclellan Gym.

Also, prior to Saturday’s match with Wofford, there will be an award ceremony celebrating Lara Newberry’s breaking of the NCAA’s all-time digs record. The libero recorded 24 digs Wednesday against Samford and broke the previous record of 2,791 with her 15th dig in the second set.

The Lady Mocs will wrap up its weekend against Furman (11-7/4-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Paladins are currently on a three-game conference winning streak and will play Samford on Saturday before squaring off against Chattanooga.

Furman puts both a strong offense and defense on the court as the team is third in the conference in hitting percentage (.211) and are first in the league in blocks with 2.48 a set. The Paladins are led by senior Nicole Palazzo on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The middle blocker leads the conference in blocks (1.20) and the team in hitting percentage (.326).

Sunday’s matchup with the Paladins is slated to begin a 1 p.m.
