Lady Mocs Tied for Eighth After First Round in Knoxville posted October 10, 2008 Chattanooga shot an opening round 296 (+8) at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship at Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville. The Lady Mocs are tied for eighth with Texas A&M and Kentucky. Freshman Maju Loza led the way for the Lady Mocs with an even-par round of 72. After shooting one-under par 35 on her first nine, Loza bogeyed holes two of the first three holes on the second nine before a birdie on her No. 16 (No. 7 as UTC teed off on No. 10 to start the day) got her back to level. She was followed closely by fellow newcomer Maria Salinas at 73 (+1). Salinas had 16 pars on the day with a birdie and two bogeys. Both bogeys came on par threes. Sophomores Emma de Groot and Christine Wolf each had a team-high three birdies en route to shooting 75 (+3) and 76 (+4), respectively. Each had a double bogey seven on a par five to clutter the rounds. Junior Kayla Stewart shot a 78 (+6). Unlike at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship where the Lady Mocs first nine was their best, Chattanooga made the turn at plus-seven. But the counters combined to shoot just one over on the way in with the team registering seven birdies. Tennessee leads the tournament at 283 (-5). The host Lady Vols are followed by North Carolina (+1) and North Carolina State (+2). The trio of Sydney Crane (North Carolina), Lauren Douglas (N.C. State) and Marika Lendl (UCF) are tied for the individual lead at four-under par 68. Marika is the eldest daughter of former tennis great Ivan Lendl. Play resumes with the second round Saturday before a final 18 on Sunday. Tomorrow’s round begins at 9 a.m. for Chattanooga teeing off on hole one with Kentucky and Louisville.
