Good Riddance To Magistrate Meeks - And Response
posted October 10, 2008

On Meeks withdrawing his application for re-appointment as magistrate, the one occurrence I had with him, seeking help, he refused. He didn't do his job. Good riddance.

Appointed to a position of judicial authority and in his latest legal decision, admittedly not while in a magistrate role, his advising someone to not give a statement or co-operate with police in a criminal investigation (the death of a precious child), only affirms my original opinion of him.

My request for help from him also involved a child. We need magistrates and judges who protect the child, not the abuser.

Was it that he didn't help you? Or, was it that he didn't dispense legal advice for free to a person he didn't know?

Over the past 13 years I have spent in law enforcement I have worked with former Magistrate Meeks as an opposing public defender and as a magistrate. I must say that every experience I have had with the man was pleasant and professional. This is more than I can say for a couple of the others in his position.

Mr. Meeks is a person who is capable of having an intelligent discussion of the law without getting angry or feeling threatened by an opposing opinion. Whenever he was confronted with an area of the law that was a little vague, he wasn't afraid to break out "the book" and read through it with you.

From the little bit I know about this case he gave some advice to a close friend without first thinking about the consequences. After analyzing the facts, he graciously withdrew his application to seek another term as magistrate. While I might not necessarily agree with the result of his advice to his friend and I certainly wouldn't condone harming a child, I can't say that my advice to a close friend in a similar situation would be different.

Best wishes to former Magistrate Meeks in his future endeavors.
