In the eighth annual Blue-Gold game, the Gold team got the best of the Blue squad with a 3-2 victory in front of a crowd of about 300 on Saturday at Jim Frost Stadium.
The Gold team outhit the Blue team 8-6 and was led by Katie Blevins’s 2-2 afternoon, which included two RBIs, two runs scored, and one home run. Five other members of the Gold team had at least a hit as former Lady Moc Rachel Norris recorded two, while Kristin Holloway, Laci Upchurch, Della Harrison, and Kaiti Kelley each had one hit apiece.
Senior Toni Hutchison paced the Blue offense with a perfect 3-3 day with one RBI. Lauren Flores also contributed offensively with two hits, while former player Nicole D’Apice recorded a hit as well.
The Gold team was able to get on the board first in the second inning thanks an Upchurch double that brought in Blevins. The Gold squad would pad that lead in the following inning thanks to a Blevins single that drove in Kristin Holloway to give the Gold team a 2-0 lead.
The Blue team would erase the deficit in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Toni Hutchison to cut the lead to 2-1. A few batters later, the Blue team would tie the game as Flores scored on a wild pitch from Kaitlin Holloway.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Gold team would score the eventual winning run on Blevins’s blast deep to left-centerfield that gave the Gold the 3-2 lead.
“The game went well,” Head Coach Frank Reed said. “We had 14 hits in the game, which is good. I thought the pitching was pretty good as well. I got to see them in action which is what I needed, so now we will come in on Monday and evaluate their performances.”
The Lady Mocs will open up the 2009 season on Feb. 6 against Maine at 3 p.m. as the team hosts the Chattanooga Challenge.
