Flames Fall To Auburn-Montgomery In OT, 1-0 posted October 11, 2008 Auburn University Montgomery's Bart Markel scored an unassisted goal in the second minute of overtime to give the Senators a hard-fought 1-0 SSAC victory over the Lee University Flames on Saturday afternoon. When the Flames and Senators tangle in men's soccer, it is always a rugged battle and this meeting was no exception. "I'm very proud of our young team," said coach Henry Moyo. "We showed a lot of discipline and held our composure under some very difficult circumstances." An outstanding effort by Lee goalie Luidgi Beauzile helped keep the battle even and allow Moyo's club the opportunity to upset an AUM team that is ranked 21st in the latest NAIA poll. Beauzile was credited with five saves. "This is a positive sign for our team," stressed Moyo. "This shows that our young club can compete against a top-level club. I thought we played much better than they did for the first 25 minutes of the second half. Maybe we can get the corner turned against another strong NAIA club next week." The Flames were only able to fire five shots in the heated contest, while the Senators got off 12 attempts. Lee returns to Cleveland with a 5-5-1 record and stands at 3-3 in the SSAC. The Senators improved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play. |
