Thanks to the volunteers at Southern Appalachia Railway Museum, a Louisville and Nashville locomotive and caboose have been meticulously repainted to the former railroad's color scheme and placed in service on the Secret City Scenic Excursion Train at Oak Ridge, Tn.

The locomotive, a 2,000-horsepower Alco C-420 was delivered to the L&N in September of 1966 and initially served in mainline service throughout the L&N system. In its later years it was based at Corbin, Kentucky and worked assignments in the coal fields of eastern Kentucky. It was also used regularly as a yard switcher in Knoxville, and worked local freight trains to Oak Ridge, Alcoa, Harriman, Solway and Middlebrook Industrial Park, among others.

After the railroad's demise in the early 80's, 1315 served on several other roads until its retirement from service. When it came to the museum, it needed substantial work and bore no resemblance to its L&N past.

In order to meet its declared mission, the museum's volunteers are committed to achieving perfect restorations of railroad equipment. Early photographs of the locomotive and drawings of the L&N herald and lettering were used as reference to achieve historical accuracy from the largest down to the smallest detail.

Engine 1315 and caboose number 6487 are in service on the scenic excursion train for the Fall colors trips every weekend during October. Rides depart at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturdays, and at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sundays. During the last weekend of the month, Halloween trick-or-treat trains will provide fun for all ages and children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes.

Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 865 241-2140. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children three through 12.

Southern Appalachia Railway Museum is a qualified non-profit corporation, dependent on income from the train rides plus public and corporate donations, which are fully tax-deductible. Membership is open to anyone 18 or older and family memberships are available. Anyone interested in membership can call 865 241-2140 or go to www.southernappalachia.railway.museum.
