The UTC Music Department, in association with the Access and Diversity Committee and Speakers and Special Events, present an opportunity to “Meet the Composer," Jonathan Bailey Holland, in a concert of Dr. Holland’s music On Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall of the UTC Fine Arts Center.
The program will feature several music department ensembles as well as faculty and student soloists. The concert is free of charge and open to the general public.
African-American composer Jonathan Bailey Holland (b. 1974) has been heralded as "one to watch" by Newsweek magazine, and has been referred to as "a craftsman with an ear for effective orchestration, a fine theatrical sense and real skill when it comes to formal layout."
Dr. Holland’s education includes the Interlochen Arts Academy, the Curtis Institute of Music and Harvard University. He has won numerous awards and Composer Assistance Grants. Reviews of his compositions frequently refer to his craftsmanship and his ear for timbre.
Dr. Kevin Ford, director of the UTC Chamber Singers who will perform a premiere performance on the concert, describes Dr. Holland’s music as having a distinct similarity to the music of Thelonious Monk.
The program for the concert includes two premieres, “Quatrains” commissioned especially for this event by the UTC Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, and “Requiem Brevis” performed by the UTC Chamber Singers. Junior Daniel Spivey will perform selections from Holland’s “Five Early Songs” and Dr. Julie Hobbs will perform his “Sonata for Flute and Piano.”
The UTC Brass Quintet will open the concert with Holland’s “Introit for Brass Quintet” and the UTC Opera Workshop will conclude the evening with Dr. Holland’s 20-minute chamber opera Naomi in the Living Room.
Dr. Holland will be on campus for two days as composer-in-residence lecturing to music classes and holding masterclasses on his compositions. Funding for the appearance of Dr. Holland is provided through a joint effort by the Access and Diversity Committee, Speakers and Special Events, and the Department of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
