The Tennessee Department of Safety announced the promotion on Monday, of Stacy D. Williams to captain over the Chattanooga District.
A native of Grundy County, Cpt. Williams started his career with the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1994. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January, 2002, and served as Administrative Lieutenant of the 12-county Chattanooga District since from July, 2006, through February, 2008.
During his years overseeing the Chattanooga District, Cpt. Williams helped initiate the development of several highway safety programs, including Interdiction Plus, which resulted in the arrests of several high-profile homicide and drug suspects.
"I have spent my career with the Tennessee Highway Patrol in the Chattanooga District, so to be named as Captain is quite an honor," said Cpt. Williams. "The troopers here are a professional group of men and women, and I look forward to leading such a fine organization with so many talented and dedicated members."
Commissioned as a Road Trooper in 1994, Mr. Williams first worked in Marion County. Since that time, he has also served as a K-9 officer and has been assigned to THP's Criminal Interdiction Team and the Methamphetamine Task Force. In 1999, Cpt. Williams was named the Chattanooga District's Trooper of the Year. He earned the honor after making 61 felony arrests, the highest in the state that year.
Cpt. Williams' latest assignment has been as Lieutenant of Troop D which patrols Coffee, Franklin and Grundy counties.
Cpt. Williams is a 1987 graduate of Grundy County High School and a 2004 graduate of the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command. Before joining the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Cpt. Williams served with the Grundy County Sheriff's Department, the Tracy City Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
He and his wife, Tammy, currently live in Altamont, Tn., with their two daughters.
Cpt. Williams replaces Cpt. Cheryl Sanders, who was transferred from Chattanooga to Captain over the Knoxville District on Sept. 17.
