Rep. Jason Mumpower
Rep. Jason Mumpower told the Chattanooga Pachyderm Club on Monday that Republicans are close to getting a "constitutional majority" of combined party members in the state Senate and House.

If the GOP can do so, he said that will mean Republican leaders will choose the state secretary of state, treasurer and comptroller.

He also said it would allow the GOP, rather than the Democrats, to name the majority members to all the county election commissions.

The Republican House minority leader said under the current Democratic-controlled election panels "some elections are being stolen." He said Republicans would bring "fairness" to the elections.

He noted that Republicans had finally won a bare majority in the Senate, and he said the party has a chance in the next election cycle or two to do the same in the House.

The speaker said GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin is "very solid in her values and is someone a lot of Americans can identify with."

He said McCain/Palin have a larger lead in Tennessee than any other state because "Republicans and rural Democrats are totally opposed to what Obama stands for."

The representative from Bristol said he originally went with Fred Thompson, then switched to Mitt Romney. But he said John McCain probably has the best chance to win of any of the GOP hopefuls.
