Lady Flames Volley For The Cure
by Rebekah Eble, Lee University
posted October 14, 2008

Lee University's Lady Flames Volleyball team will take the court Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. against Southern Wesleyan to Volley for the Cure. This will be the team's second Volley for the Cure event and will take place as part of Lee's Homecoming weekend.

In fall 2007 the Lady Flames played Berry College in a conference match to raise money for the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation in Chattanooga which works to raise breast cancer awareness. Their goal was to rally together with the Cleveland community and Lee students to raise $10,000 to donate to the foundation, but the Flames far exceeded their goal by raising $17,000.

This year the Lady Flames have once again set their goal at $10,000. The money will go directly to the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation which awards thousands of dollars each year to high school and college students in the form of scholarships. These scholarships go to students who have lost a parent to breast cancer or have a parent who is a survivor. During last year's game, the foundation awarded Gretchen Higdon, a student and volleyball player from Ooltewah High School whose mother is a two-time survivor of breast cancer, with a scholarship. Higdon is now a freshman at Lee and a starting setter for the Lady Flames.

The team will be selling pink Volley for the Cure T-shirts for $5 on Lee's campus in the weeks prior to the game in hopes to "pack the stands with pink." At the event, the Flames will have a silent auction in the lobby of Walker Arena, and they will also be sending around pink buckets during the game for those who did not have the opportunity to give. T-shirts will also be sold at the door.

The game will be held in the Walker Arena and is free and open to the public.
