Following a record-setting week, Chattanooga volleyball player Lara Newberry was unanimously named the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Volleyball Update as well as the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Newberry garnered the awards after enjoying one of the finest weeks of her career as the senior broke the NCAA’s all-time record for digs, which was previously set at 2,791 by Minnesota’s Paula Gentile. Newberry broke Gentile’s mark with her 15th dig in the Lady Mocs’ 3-0 loss to Samford on Wednesday. She now owns the NCAA records for both digs in a career and digs in a single season (942).
The libero would then follow up that act with a career-best 51 dig performance on Saturday in Chattanooga’s 3-2 victory over Wofford. Her 51 digs in a match is second only to Northern Arizona’s Brittany Stowers’s 52.
In the Newberry’s final match of the week, the senior posted 27 more digs in a 3-1 win over Furman. For the week she tallied 102 digs and averaged 8.5 digs per set as the Lady Mocs went 2-1 during the week and currently sit tied for second place with UNC Greensboro in the conference’s North division.
On the season the libero now has 480 digs, which is tops in the nation, and currently averages 6.19 digs per set, best for second in the nation. For her career, she now has 2,879 digs.
Newberry and the Lady Mocs will return to play this weekend against The Citadel on Saturday and the College of Charleston on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
