Baylor Leading Girls Team; Baylor, McCallie Tied

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Baylor's Ryan Thornton and Sofia Hoglund took first-round leads Tuesday in the Division II-AA state golf tournament.
Playing at the Old Fort Course here, Thornton took a 1-shot lead over Knox Webb's Grant Milner with a brilliant 5-under 67. He has a two-shot advantage over McCallie's Jacob Everts.
In the DII-AA girls, Hoglund shot a 1-under 71 and took a 1-shot lead over Knox Webb's Leigh Henderson. Baylor's Morgan McQuary stands at third place, two shots off the lead.
In the boys team competition, Baylor and McCallie finished the first day in a tie at 289 with MUS third at 291. The Red Raiders are seeking their sixth straight state title and their ninth in the last 10 years.
In the girls team competition, Baylor took a commanding lead in search of its 14 straight title. The Lady Raiders stand at 144, eight shots ahead of GPS and nine shots ahead of Knox Webb.
Last week, GPS and McCallie shocked the Baylor teams by winning region titles.
The tournament will conclude here Wednesday with another 18-hole round.
