Dalton Officer Chasing Suspect Hits Gas Station Pump; Fire Starts
posted October 14, 2008

A Dalton officer pursuing a suspect struck a gas tank at a convenience store and a fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 3 p.m., two Dalton police units (one marked vehicle and one unmarked vehicle) spotted a suspect with warrants for his arrest near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Hawthorne Street.

The police units attempted a traffic stop, and, during the course of the traffic stop, the unmarked unit struck a gas pump at the Marathon gas station near the intersection. The station’s emergency cut-off safety system cut off fuel to the pumps, and a fire was quickly contained.

No one was injured either in the vehicles or inside the gas station.

The Dalton Fire Department responded, and the Dalton Police Department closed off Glenwood between Tyler Street and MLK and Hawthorne between Spencer Street and Maiden Lane for approximately an hour as a safety precaution.

The incident is still under investigation by the Dalton Police Department.
