Colleen Schmitt, M.D., MHS has been appointed Memorial Health Care System’s Medical Director for Research.
The Medical Director for Research is a newly developed role within Memorial Health Care System to enhance and expand access to research opportunities. Under Dr. Schmitt’s leadership, the research department will provide a vigorous pipeline for new clinical trials, expert support for any hospital or medical staff wishing to begin research and efficient service to those physicians who already have active research programs in their specialty.
Dr. Schmitt brings a vast wealth of knowledge to this role. After completing her fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Duke University, Dr. Schmitt went on to complete a fellowship in Health Services Research followed by a Master’s degree in Biometry in Informatics. In 1996 Dr. Schmitt opened Southeastern Clinical Research, the first multi-specialty clinical trials center in this area. Through Southeastern Clinical Research, she has conducted more than 150 clinical trials covering a wide breadth of specialties.
