Local Artists Break Image Through “StereoType”
posted October 17, 2008

As the Southside of Chattanooga emerges with local artists, the variety of art and entertainment that Chattanooga has to choose from grows as well. Creativinc, a new local art organization, in partnership with New Juncture will be hosting Chattanooga’s first progressive underground art show. The event will feature painters, graffiti artists, and photographers from Atlanta, Chattanooga and surrounding areas. Funds raised will benefit Battle Academy’s art department.

Fernando Martinez, Creativinc co-founder and local artist, said, “We want to give Chattanooga a closer look into what the art world has to offer. There is so much more out there than what we see in our galleries and museums. You can see some great talent out of those settings such as street murals and building graffiti.”

“Stereotype” will feature graffiti artists including KyleG, Seven, Andrew Wright, Lucien Downes, Smooth-E, Shaun LaRose, Spectro, Fernando Martinez and John Freese. The event will feature a live mural painting by featured artists.

Interactive activities include a Visitor Wall, which attendees will be able to paint themselves. ToneHarm, a local DJ group, will provide music for dance and entertainment.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Battle Academy’s art department and will feature a selection of Battle Academy students’ art work.

Carla Guerra, Battle Academy’s art teacher, stated, “I’m excited to be associated with a project that brings a new feel for art into our community, but will also be a major fundraiser for my students. The funds given to us will go toward purchasing new art materials that our students need for art development and learning. We’re creating new opportunities to give our students an outlet they did not have before.”

Andrew Wright, local artist and co-founder of Creativinc, said, “As local artists, we hope to turn Chattanooga into an art Mecca. But, most importantly, the children in our public school systems need to have the tools to learn about art and use art as an expressive outlet.”

Creativinc plans to host art events such as “Stereotype” four times a year. Each event will feature a different style of progressive art. Proceeds will go to a variety of local art initiatives.

“Stereotype” will be held at The Church at 1601 Rossville Ave. on Friday, Oct. 24. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $12 online and $15 at the door. Visit www.Creativinc.com to purchase tickets. Open bar and appetizers will be provided with purchase of ticket.

Event sponsors include Market Street Tavern, Atlanta Brewing Company, Big River Grille and Royal Restrooms.
