More Than 10,000 Expected Downtown For Head Of The Hooch
Schedule, Awards Times, Where To Watch The Race
posted October 30, 2008

More than 10,000 coaches, rowers, family members and regatta spectators will fill the downtown riverfront in Chattanooga for the 28th Head of the Hooch rowing regatta this weekend.

There are over 1,300 entries, a 5% increase over 2007, and more than 3,000 rowers competing in this year’s two-day head race.

Participants include: Daniel Wolff, Head of the Hooch Regatta Director; Breast Cancer survivors, several will be rowing in the Row for the Cure trophy events; Para-Olympians, several will be rowing in events; Ulrich Lemcke, Assistant Regatta Director, Atlanta Rowing Club; Doug Beville, Assistant Regatta Director, Lookout Rowing Club; Bernie Burgener, President, Atlanta Rowing Club; Jim Crichton, President, Lookout Rowing Club; and Members of U.S. Men’s 2008 Olympic Rowing Team - Bronze Medalists.

Rowing events will be held on the Tennessee River on Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Hooch, formerly known as the Head of the Chattahoochee, is a three-mile rowing race event held once a year. The Hooch is organized by both the Atlanta Rowing Club (ARC) and the Lookout Rowing Club (LRC) of Chattanooga.

The first “Head of the Hooch” was established as a three-mile race in Roswell, Ga., in 1981 and hosted 100 participants in its inaugural year. Due to tremendous popularity and growth, the race was moved to the Olympic rowing venue at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga., where it grew to over 3,800 participants and over 1,000 boats by 2004.

The regatta draws participants from all over the USA and Canada, and has hosted the USA and German national teams. It is now the second largest rowing regatta in the nation. The largest rowing regatta, Head of the Charles, is held annually on the Charles River in Boston.

Where to watch the Head of the Hooch:
Chattanooga Pier: Racing teams will stage and take out on two floating docks near the Pier. The logistics involved in getting hundreds of racing shells in and out of the water is half the show.
Ross’ Landing Spectator Seating (Finish Line): The finish line is directly downstream of the Market St. Bridge. The race announcer will be located here, keeping spectators updated on the competition.
The Walnut Street Bridge: The rowers will be sprinting for the finish as they pass by Maclellan Island and under the south end of the bridge.
The Bluff View Arts District: The view from the sculpture garden overlook will allow spectators to see the teams pouring it on from upstream.
The Tennessee Riverpark: From the Chattanooga Rowing Center to the Boathouse Restaurant, the teams will come very close to the south shore as they make their last turn onto the final straightaway. Expect to hear lots of grunting, yelling, and maybe some salty language from the coxswains.
Coolidge Park (North Shore): Though most of the racing action will be along the south shore of the river, the teams will be rowing upstream to the start along the north shore.
