14 Chattanooga Residents Build Classroom Without Walls At Calvin Donaldson
posted November 18, 2008

Friday marks the completion and dedication of Calvin Donaldson Environmental Science Academy's new outdoor classroom. Partnering with RKO Propeties/3D Construction, fourteen local residents have spearheaded the project as part of Leadership21, a Christian leadership course through Chattanooga Matters.

CDESA is a Pre-K through fifth grade school in South Chattanooga that was recently designated as an environmental science magnet school. Building on the momentum surrounding the school, administrators, teachers and volunteers at CDESA are developing a holistic approach to address the environment and sustainability through environmental education and social responsibility.

The new outdoor classroom will further enable teachers to incorporate environmental science into their daily curriculum. Along with shaded, amphitheater-style seating for an entire grade level, the classroom includes a teacher's podium and work tables for projects and experiments. The outdoor classroom is located in a wooded area beside a stream that runs behind the school.

Other slated projects at CDESA include a storm water retention pond, tree plantings, a school garden, nature trails and the LEED certified restoration of a condemned annex building on campus. If you would like to donate time or resources to these efforts, contact Heidi Chapin by calling 423-825-7328 or by emailing chapin_heidi@hcde.org.

In September, the 26th Leadership21 class began a 10-week session for a select group of Christian leaders in the Chattanooga area. The course, an initiative of Chattanooga Matters, has had more than 475 graduates in the past two decades. Chattanooga Matters helps meet the strategic needs of the Christian community in Chattanooga through prayerful partnerships and planned initiatives.
