Battles For Chattanooga Anniversary Programs Saturday, Sunday
posted November 18, 2008

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host special interpretive programs presented in commemoration of the 145th Anniversary of the Battles for Chattanooga. A variety of educational programs will be offered on Saturday and Sunday.

The Battles for Chattanooga, Nov. 23-25, 1863, marked the end of a five month campaign for control of this key rail center, the "Gateway to the Deep South." The following year, General William T. Sherman used Chattanooga as a base of supply and communication during his Georgia campaigns.

Battlefield staff and volunteers will present a series of special tours and living history demonstrations interpreting the battle actions of 145 years ago. These programs will be conducted at various locations throughout the Chattanooga area.

For all walking tours, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a bottle of water, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Rob Clifton, author of "Chattanooga Then and Now," which includes photographs of Point Park and Lookout Mountain, will conduct a book signing on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center.

The full schedule of programs is also available on the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military web page, www.nps.gov/chch.
