Welcome to this month’s travel review where I’ll explore the current trends in our industry that may be of interest to you.

What? The market is down, and I think it’s time to take a trip? I must be crazy! OK, OK, I understand your initial response very well. And I won’t deny that most of us have taken big hits in our investments, not to mention those unfortunates whose jobs have evaporated or been severely cut back. We’re all affected by the economic turmoil now roiling around the world. To some, though, life without travel is too much to bear.

Just as the housing markets have, and cost their owners some equity, a home buyer views this moment as a great opportunity to purchase a house at very attractive prices. So it is in the travel industry. Cruise lines (even the best) are offering wonderful values for those ready to step up and go. Hotels, resorts, airlines, tour companies are right there too. With demand at a 20 year low, the deals are plentiful and offer tremendous value.

For example:

There are more discounted business class air seats now available for destinations worldwide.
Cruises by some excellent lines are now being offered 2 for 1.
Free coach air is being offered by some cruise lines to entice business.
Many famous hotels and resorts are discounted heavily this winter after the holidays, especially Hawaii.

Now of course, there are pitfalls for the unsuspecting traveler. Smart ones contact and work with a well regarded Travel Consultant who offers knowledge, expertise and accountability. You should also utilize a credit card for travel purchases, so if an airline, cruise line or tour operator does not provide services as promised, you likely will be protected from financial loss. It is prudent in this climate to involve your bank or card issuer in a travel transaction.

And remember, the only constant in this world is change. The markets have taken a fall, but in time they will recover. Though it might sound nuts to consider traveling now, you will receive astounding values which will not be there when demand resumes. Also consider that the clock is ticking for each of us. If you can afford to spend time and money on a trip now, while your health and abilities are intact, and do not do so, you may never get the chance again.

Years ago a fine gentlemen client came to me seeking a final, life’s end world cruise. He knew his days were numbered, his family well cared for, and he wanted this special trip for himself and his wife. Now world cruises are not inexpensive in any category, but he chose a lovely suite with a connecting bedroom, so that members of his family might join them for a segment of the trip, thereby enriching the experience for the whole family. He was so enthusiastic and happy with his purchase that he smiled and laughed with joy as we progressed with his booking.

Some few days before final payment was due, a daughter of his decided that this gentleman was not in a condition to allow the voyage to commence. She consulted with her father’s doctor and together they put the kabosh on this carefully planned, long anticipated final trip. The doctor called me to request cancellation for medical reasons, and I referred him promptly to my client, his patient. My gentlemen client called later to let me know of the circumstances of his cancellation. His heart was broken and his dreams crushed, but he bravely acquiesced to the others’ opinions. Sadly, his special, final trip never took place. He lived another year and a half and most certainly could have realized a beautiful life long dream. He was fully prepared to face his demise if it came at sea, but was denied the opportunity even to attempt the voyage. Don’t let something like this happen to you!

So I suggest to those of you who are able to travel the world now, go for it! A fine trip will pay dividends in at least three ways:

The excitement of planning brings the joy of anticipation.
The actual experience. Life changing, eye opening, and full of pleasant surprises.
Treasured memories, photos and journals that will bring you and your family smiles and laughter for, hopefully, many years to come!

It is up to you to decide, that in spite of current uncertainties, which by the way will always exist, you will choose to travel.

For personal assistance and service, we are always honored to receive your call and help you on your way!
