Volkswagen To Build Paint Shop With Ability To Produce 1,000 Cars A Day posted November 19, 2008 Volkswagen Plant Manager Frank Fischer said in Chattanooga on Wednesday that VW plans to build its paint shop large enough at the Enterprise South Industrial Park so that 1,000 cars per day can be produced. County Commissioner Bill Hullander, who was among local officials touring the plant site with VW leaders, said, "That is exciting news. The last I heard the plant shop was going to be designed for 400-500 cars a day." Commissioner Hullander said the VW site is really taking shape, including the moving of 3.5 miles of creek bed. He said the new creek bed will be attractive with landscaping and numerous meanders. VW is planning to begin pouring concrete in December and have a groundbreaking in mid-January. The paint shop will be the first building erected. From Oct. 8 until now, 250,000 tons of stone have been placed at the plant pad site. Officials said 6.9 million cubic yards of dirt were moved at the Tyner site. There were 279 pieces of heavy equipment used, and 388 workers from 18 companies worked on the site clearing project. Over three million pounds of explosives were used to remove rock mounds. |
