Resilient Football Vols Trying To Maintain Effort by special report to The Chattanoogan posted November 19, 2008
"It has been a brisk two days, although tonight wasn't nearly as cold as last night,'' head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We've handled it fine and gotten some good work done.'' The Vols, 3-7 overall and 1-5 SEC, enter this weekend tied for last in the combined conference standings but still have a chance to finish as high as seventh if things went their way. Fulmer says the fight left in his team despite the current three-game losing streak and disappointing season has not gone unnoticed. "Youth is very resilient, and I was impressed Sunday night. I really was. I didn't know exactly what to expect coming off the open date. "I haven't been on very many teams that haven't reached all they wanted to reach, but there are a lot of ways an attitude can go. And as I've said all along, ours really hasn't been an effort problem. Ours really hasn't been a preparation problem. We've got some things we'd certainly like to do better at some positions, but we've had a good attitude.'' Tennessee has two more chances to leave a good taste to the 2008 season, with upcoming games against rivals Vanderbilt and Kentucky. And the Vols head coach says this weeks practices have shown him something about the team's inner workings. "I think it says something about the leadership of the team by the players,'' he said. "I think it certainly says something about how the coaches have continued to bring energy to the practice field and the meetings. It's the personality of this team with some really good men and some really good young players.'' QUOTABLES ON LOTT TROPHY SEMIFINALIST ERIC BERRY Candidates for The Lott Trophy® must be more than outstanding football players; they must embody the IMPACT attributes of Ronnie Lott -- Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, Tenacity. Below are some quotes regarding the character (as well as the football skill) of Tennessees Eric Berry, one of eight Lott Trophy semifinalists this year. These student-athletes have learned that their leadership role off the field is even more important in life. The four finalists will be announced Nov. 26 and the winner at the Fifth Annual Lott Trophy Banquet on Dec. 14 in Newport Beach, Calif. From Fernandez West, UT Associate Director of Athletic Student Life: "Eric has two wonderful parents that have instilled in him the value of an education; he is an aspiring dentist; still made honor roll in high school, took more difficult courses; finished summer school with a perfect 4.0 GPA. One of three freshman football players to earn SEC Academic Honor Roll (over 3.0 GPA), Eric will graduate in just three years. He takes his academics as seriously as he takes his athletics.'' From Judith Jackson, UT Associate Director of Student Athlete Welfare: "He has already achieved more in the classroom and on the field than most athletes achieve in a lifetime. As a student athlete he is motivated, cooperative, dependable and a quick learner.'' From Joe Glenn, Wyoming Head Coach: "He'll go and break on the ball and cut in front of it like the pass was intended for him. Then, once he gets his hands on the ball, look out. He's really special, running with the ball and stopping and starting, getting back up to full speed. The guy has got it. He's one of the best players I've seen." VANDERBILT FOOTBALL PARKING AND TAILGATING INFO FOR 2008 Vanderbilt University and its Commodore athletics family looks forward to hosting Tennessee football fans at Saturday's game. The University wants to make this weekend's trip to Nashville as pleasant as possible. The following arrangements have been made to provide parking for the game. Parking and especially tailgating are limited on campus. For Vol fans planning larger tailgate pre-game parties or wishing to park recreation vehicles, contact the Harris-Hillman School, located directly across from the south side of campus about three blocks from Vanderbilt Stadium. The school typically hosts visiting fans; phone number is (615) 298-8085 for further information. Parking on grass or in other restricted areas Fannie Mae Dees Park is a Nashville public park about a block away from Harris-Hillman. The park provides an excellent picnic setting but alcoholic beverages and parking on its grass are prohibited. These policies will be strictly enforced and violators will be subject to fines, towing of vehicles and/or arrest by Nashville Police. Policies include the following restrictions, plus the requirement that all trash must be disposed of in a trash receptacle: The removal of barricades The use of alcohol, drugs and any other illegal substance Loud music and other sound amplification Erection of tents or other shelters without a permit Open grilling, disposal of charcoal, etc., without a permit Visiting fans will also get plenty of helpful information by clicking the Gameday Central icon on Vanderbilts official athletics Web site, www.vucommodores.com. Parking on Metro Streets Limited parking is available on Metro Nashville city streets around campus. Those parking on the street should be considerate of residents and business owners in these areas by not blocking driveways and not impairing drivers visibility by parking too close to an intersection. Also, do not to leave behind litter or other debris. Metro Nashville Police will be patrolling this area during the game and violators are subject to ticketing and/or towing of their vehicle. Please help keep the neighborhood surrounding Vanderbilts campus clean and beautiful. (E-mail Stan Crawley at wscrawley@earthlink.net) |
