Lady Tigers, Tigers Both Pick Up Wins Wednesday posted November 20, 2008 The Tigers and Lady Tigers basketball teams picked up two critical conference wins Wednesday night in the Health and Fitness Complex. The Lady Tigers defeated nationally-ranked Volunteer State 103-89 in overtime. However, this task proved difficult for the Lady Tigers as they trailed most of the game and went in with a nine-point deficit at the half. Although turnovers and a lack of defensive rebounds plagued Chattanooga State for the entire first half, the remaining 20 minutes were packed with the Lady Tigers inching back to regain the lead over the Lady Pioneers around the 5:00 minute mark. Freshman guard, Rudie Denson, proved to be the game-changer as she came off the bench with under 2:00 minutes to play in regulation and hit two key three-pointers to put the Lady Tigers ahead. In a last ditch effort by Volunteer State, Freshman guard Shaniqua Gray drove down the lane and layed it in to force the game into overtime. In the additional five minutes, the Lady Tigers never looked back as they rolled on to defeat the Lady Pioneers 103-89. Six players reached double figures for Chattanooga State. The Lady Tigers were led by Sophomore guard, Princess Carson's 18 points, all of which came from behind the arc. Following closely behind was Freshman forward Jaqualia Wynn with 17 points. Sophomore transfer Ashley Porter and Freshman guard Rudie Denson chipped in with 15 points apiece and phenomenal guard Hannah Powers and Charnette Davis added 12 points apiece. The Lady Tigers (4-2, 3-0) will be at home again this weekend in two non-conference matchups with Middle Georgia College at 6 p.m. on Friday and CVCC at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Also picking up a key conference win last night was the men's basketball program. The Tigers defeated the Pioneers 85-81 to put them at 2-1 in conference play and an impressive 6-1 start. Leading the way for the Tigers was Sophomore center Andrew Woods with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Woods was followed in scoring by Freshmen Marcus Jefferson (17 points), Damaian Duncan (11 points), and P.J. Meyers (10 points). Freshman forward William Tolefree pulled down 10 boards for the Tigers. Early in the week, the Tigers defeated the King College JV squad 81-69 and Tennessee Temple's JV team 108-76. The Tigers will also be at home this Friday and Saturday as they take on the JV team from Bryan College on Friday at 8 p.m. and CVCC Saturday at 4 p.m. |
