LaFayette Physical Therapy Named November Downtown Business Of The Month posted November 21, 2008 A physical therapy office’s recent coordinated activities with a local school have earned it recognition as LaFayette’s Downtown Business of the Month. LaFayette Downtown Development Authority (DDA) selected LaFayette Physical Therapy as November Downtown Business of the Month because of the business’ work last month to incorporate fun into the school activities to focus on balance, coordination, stabilization, fine motor movement and agility, DDA Promotions Committee Chairman Bill Scarborough said. “In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we sponsored October Olympics at Gilbert Elementary School, where our focus was all about movement,” said Dr. LaTefa Terry, doctor of physical therapy at LaFayette Physical Therapy. “There were three staff present and a past patient along with approximately 500 kids.” The students received important guidance while learning that exercise can be fun, Dr. Terry said. This message reflects LaFayette Physical Therapy’s mission to provide quality care with consistency, compassion and excellence. “Our focus is to achieve optimal movement, education, function and safety to promote wellness in the community,” she said. The business provides outpatient physical therapy to include orthopedic, neurological and post surgical care, as well as treatment for back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, neck pain, arthritic pain, balance, post-op diagnoses and gait. The business also treats patients with temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly called TMJ syndrome, which results in jaw pain and impairment. “When I first came to LaFayette Physical Therapy, I could not raise my arm at all,” a patient said. “By my second visit, LaTefa had me raising it up. My arm was in a sling, and I couldn't drive with it or use it for anything. I can now lift my arm, drive and even do push-ups using my arm.” LaFayette Physical Therapy is an independent business, which functions like a doctor’s office and works with patients’ insurance companies. Paid staff members receive on-the-job training and continuing education, Dr. Terry said. “I feel that we have a great relationship with all of our patients and clients,” insurance manager Justin Watson said. “We offer a fun, relaxing environment so that our patients feel comfortable and achieve maximum results even in the midst of pain.” “In the community we strive to be an intricate part by actively participating in school, job and local events,” Dr. Terry said. “We have sponsored events in the school system and the local senior centers.” LaFayette Physical Therapy is glad to be in downtown because the location is easy to find, the business is in the heart of the city, and traffic driven in this area promotes growth for local businesses, she said. Established in August 2006, the business selected its location at 120 W. Villanow St. because another physical therapy practice was in that location. Future plans include eventually adding another therapist. Dr. Terry said she expects after adding another therapist and support staff, the business will need to relocate to a larger facility.
