Marion County Warrior Cliff Wilson (30) attempts to gain yardage after the catch but is brought down by Boyd Buchannan's Taylor Shull (7) during the Warrior's 7-6 win Friday night. The Bucs end their season at 10-3, while 11-2 Marion will play at Alcoa next Friday night in the semi-finals of the TSSAA playoffs.
When both Marion County and Boyd Buchanan square off with 10-2 records respectively, in a quarterfinal playoff game, you would expect the score to be close. Expectations were met in Friday nights game, and the Warriors slipped past the Bucs 7-6.

After blanking each other in the first half, both teams picked up touchdowns in the third quarter, and both came on short runs. The only difference was that Marion's Tyler Sweeton buried his extra point through the uprights, and Boyd's Joey Glisson missed his.

The Warriors drew first blood in the third quarter as running back Joe Muir, who battled short yardage gains all night, finally crossed into the end zone.

Minutes later, the Bucs responded on a four yard rush from Ben Beasley, who ended up with 124 rushing yards on the night.

"I was surprised it was only a 7-6 game," said Marion coach Troy Boeck.

"Our guys really stepped it up and made big plays when they counted," said Boeck. "They've gotten better each week. You've got to give an awful lot of credit to Boyd."

Marion only produced 140 yards of offense in the game, a fraction of the 415 yards the Bucs conjured, but Boyd suffered eight turnovers that kept them out of the end zone.

"We had a tough time moving the ball," said Boeck. "We must have punted 100 times."

Boyd running back Taylor Gilley picked up 74 yards on the night, and quarterback Nic Hughes hooked up for 194 yards in the air to go with his three interceptions. The majority of those yards went to Taylor Shull, who had three receptions for 113 yards.

Joe Muir only had 22 yards rushing on the game, but ended up with the most important three yards for the Warriors.

"I felt like we had a good chance to win tonight," said Muir after the game. "I knew we had the talent. We just had to put it together. You can talk about 1000 yards all day long but it is the big fella's up front that get all the credit."

Marion County will play at Alcoa in the Class 2A state semifinals next week.
