Lee Women Dominate Columbia 87-37
posted November 22, 2008

The Lee women's basketball team rebounded from an upset at the hand of Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday night by thrashing visiting Columbia College (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon, 87-37.

Lee jumped out to a commanding 51-21 lead by halftime and used reserves freely in posting its fifth victory of the season against two defeats. The Lady Flames also evened their Southern States Athletic Conference record at 1-1. Columbia College drops to 2-4 on the year and 0-2 in the SSAC.

Sophomore Brooke McKinnon paced the solid Lee offensive attack with 22 points, five assists and five steals. She was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and also grabbed four rebounds.

"The most impressive thing about Brooke's stats was five assists against no turnovers," commented coach Marty Rowe, who made a couple of changes in the starting lineup. "We will continue to look at different combinations and try to improve with each game."

While McKinnon was setting the pace, junior post-player Katie Nelson followed close behind. She recorded another double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Nelson also had three blocked shots and made 8-of-12 shots from the field.

Freshman Angela Spann tallied 13 points and dished off two assists in 28 minutes of playing time. "She is only a freshman, but right now is probably our most consistent player," admitted Rowe. "She understands the game and is doing the things that we are coaching."

Freshman Kari Jo Harris also started the contest and responded with eight points, three rebounds and three assists. "I was especially happy with our assists to turnover ratio in the first half," noted Rowe. "It is the first time all season we have been on the plus side in that department. We have to learn how to take care of the basketball."

Allison Rader directed the Lee offense and dished off four assists, while scoring five points. Ten Lady Flames scored in the romp.

For Columbia, Kiara Fefie was the leading scorer with nine points. The visitors shot only 27 percent from the field. Thirteen of their points came from the free-throw line, where they converted 13-of-19. Lee forced 34 floor mistakes.

The Lady Flames' numbers were solid across the board. They made 32-of-68 (47 percent) from the field; hit 9-of-21 treys (43 percent); and converted 14-of-16 (88 percent) charity attempts. They out-rebounded Columbia 42-24.

Things get a whole lot tougher for Rowe and his squad next weekend. They will travel to California and test the defending NAIA champions, Vanguard University and The Masters, who is also a ranked squad.
