Bush Pardons Rossville Man On 25-Year-Old Food Stamp Conviction posted November 24, 2008 A Rossville, Ga., man is one of 14 people whose presidential pardons were announced Monday by the U.S. Justice Department. Obie Gene Helton was sentenced April 1, 1983, to two years probation for unauthorized acquisition of food stamps. He was fined $500 and ordered to pay $875 in restitution, according to information provided by the Justice Department. Helton was one of two Georgia residents on the list of pardons. Geneva Yvonne Hogg of Chamblee, Ga., was pardoned on a 1980 conviction for bank embezzlement. Prior to the latest pardons, President Bush had granted a total of 171 and eight commutations during his two terms in the White House. |
