A reputed leader of the Gangster Disciples street gang was sentenced Monday to nine years in federal prison.

Michael Lebron Jackson, 34, appeared before Federal Judge Sandy Mattice.

His sentencing range was 188 to 235 months.

Jackson's attorney, Aubrey Harper, said he got into the drug culture when he was a teen. He said his life had been "salvaged" by the arrest by federal authorities, which he said caused Jackson to re-evaluate his longtime involvement with drugs.

Jackson has been held at the Bradley County Jail for about a year.

Attorney Harper said Jackson began cooperating with federal and state authorities shortly after his arrest. He said prosecutors are expected to recommend a reduction in his sentence in early 2009 due to the help.

Jackson had been arrested along with Demont Berry, 35.

Jackson was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and distribution of crack cocaine. Berry was charged with distribution of crack cocaine.
