Stinnett, Maudie Frances Underwood (Cleveland)

Maudie Frances Underwood Stinnett, 91, died on Tuesday November 25, 2008 in a local assisted living facility.

She was the daughter of the late Herschel L. Underwood and Nora C. Vickers Underwood. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James D. Stinnett; three brothers, Lewis Underwood, Paul Underwood and Ray Underwod who was killed in Korea in 1950; one sister, Edna Ledford; brothers-in-law, Luther ‘Luke’ Ledford and Joe Bates; and a great-nephew, Chris Boring.

She was born February 2, 1917 in Rock Island, Tn. and moved to Parksville, Tn. when she was 3. She graduated from Polk County High School in 1929. She went to work at a meat packing company in Charleston upon graduation. When World War II started she went to work at Signal Corp and later worked at Dupont in Chattanooga until her retirement in 1973 when she then moved to Astor, Fla. She moved back to Cleveland in April 2006 to be with family. She was a member of Astor Baptist Church in Astor, Fla., where she served as the Sunday school secretary and custodian for many years. She loved the Lord and serving Him in any way possible. She enjoyed playing the harmonica and singing. While recovering from surgery in January, she was at Life Care of Cleveland where she was selected to serve as Ms. Life Care of Cleveland 2008. She had most recently resided at Wellington Place where she enjoyed crafts and fellowshipping with other residents and staff. In her younger years, she played the guitar and sang with her sisters at Cookson Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Carrie Bates of McDonald; sisters-in-law, Laverine Underwood of Chattanooga and Mary Underwood of Cleveland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Jim Rush Funeral Homes, Wildwood Avenue Chapel with Reverend J. C. Eller officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from noon until the time of the service at 3 p.m.
