NewsChannel 9 Has Layoffs, Retirements In News Department posted December 30, 2008 Several NewsChannel 9 news department staffers have opted for retirement or have been given layoff notices. They include some some producers and assignment editors, including several with long tenures at the local TV station. Taking retirement are two 31-year veterans - John Creel, the news operation manager, and Steve Headrick, production manager. One of those let go was longtime Channel 9 employee Melydia Clewell. Ms. Clewell most recently was assignment editor. Her last day will be Jan. 2. Ms. Clewell originally joined the WTVC staff in 1991 as an unpaid college intern. She worked the next 12 years as a field reporter, show producer and news anchor. She was on the Good Morning Chattanooga show and NewsChannel 9 for Women as well as serving as a midday anchor. She returned to NewsChannel 9 after the birth of her daughter in 2004 to cover a temporary producer shortage and within the year was asked to take on the duties of running the assignment desk. NewsChannel 9 officials did not return phone calls asking for comment. With the down economy, revenues have been shriveling at a number of broadcast and print outlets. |
