EPB To Build $4.2 Million Substation For Volkswagen
posted January 16, 2009

Volkswagen has asked the EPB to build it a $4.2 million substation at its site at the Enterprise South Industrial Park.

Harold DePriest, EPB President, said VW could have selected either EPB or TVA to build the station and provide electricity.

He said, "We're pleased that we will be working with Volkswagen."

However, he said the margin "is extremely small on large customers. We make most of our income on residential customers."

Mr. DePriest said Volkswagen will pay for the construction of the 161 KV substation.

He said Volkswagen will pay just like other customers, but at an industrial rate. He said Mueller and Invista are the only other large customers in that category.

He said Volkswagen and about 10-11 suppliers will use about 33 megawatts of power. He said the DuPont Plant, in its heyday, was using over 50 megawatts.

Mr. DePriest said work on the substation should start soon and take about nine months. It will be built on the northern edge of the Industrial Park. He said less than half a mile of line will have to be built to the substation because a major transmission line is nearby.
