Going Too Far In Banning Books posted February 19, 2009 Would somebody please explain why we have not heard more from the media about this absurd banning of old childrens books? Why would any sane person ban the sale of childrens books printed before 1985 simply because they just might contain lead in the illustrations or the binding? They cannot produce one instance of a child being poisoned from reading a book. These books have been in circulation for over 25 years at a minimum and have been in the hands of millions of children without harm. Do you realize what this means? Goodbye to all the Disney classics, goodbye the Tales of Peter Rabbit and Lassie and Black Beauty and Dick and Jane and many more. These should be national treasures and not destined for the city dump. What are they thinking? Several Goodwill stores and other resale shops have already discarded many and refuse to accept any more. The only way they can sell them is to submit to cost-prohibitive testing of the material. What a tragedy. For the record, they are giving a tiny loophole to adult collectors. I have always loved books so now I shall become a collector and I will buy all of the pre-1985 childrens books I can find and I will not be hiding them away in boxes. You, Mr. Government have gone too far. Karen Fink Chattanooga |
