A police report on the traffic death of bicyclist David L. Meek says the truck driver who became entangled with him "could have seen the bike, but it is not likely that he should have seen the bike."
Chattanooga Police plan to take the case to the Hamilton County Grand Jury and let the grand jurors decide if charges should be brought against the truck driver - a 58-year-old Dunlap, Tn., man.
The acccident happened last Friday morning about 6:40 a.m. in the 1000 block of Ashland Terrace near the Food Lion at Norcross Road.
Mr. Meek was in the right travel lane going southbound and the white 2007 International truck from the firm of Roger Camp Contracting came up behind him.
The report says the driver stated that he did not see the bicyclist until he "felt the thump."
The bicycle had a flashing LED light at the rear.
A reconstruction was performed and visibility issues were tested, police said.
The truck sideswiped the bicycle, and the rider fell under the truck. He was run over by the truck's rear tires.
Mr. Meek, who lived in Red Bank, died of his injuries while being transported to the hospital.
Mr. Meek, who was 51, was a biking enthusiast who was active in the Chattanooga Bicycle Club.
