Parks & Recreation Announces Upcoming Activities & Events

Swimming Lessons at Warner Park Pool June 2 – 24. Lessons will be available on Tuesday and Wednesday. 5:15 p.m. for pre-school ages, 5:50 p.m. for school ages. Cost $32.00 for eight lessons. Contact Peggy Grall: 697-1385.

Senior Health & Fitness Day postponed to Wednesday, June 3, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
TN Riverpark Hamilton County & City Recreation Dept. event provides health screenings and information booths, exercise classes, fun walk, games, lunch, prizes, & more for seniors city-wide.

Sib Celebration - Thursday, June 4, at Greenway Farm, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Free event for brothers and sisters of kids with special needs to meet and have fun with other siblings facing the same challenges. Call 648-1757 to register or for more information. Food, games, prizes and art. Co-sponsored by the City’s Therapeutic Recreation Program, Siskin Children’s Institute, TENNder Care, TEIS, & Signal Centers.

Riverbend Festival takes over the Southside of the riverfront June 5 – 13.

National Trail Day – Saturday, June 6, at 9:00 a.m. Guided walking and bike riding tour of Enterprise South Nature Park. Co-sponsored with the County. Folks meet at Bonny Oaks Drive entrance across from Redoubt Soccer at 8:30. Activities at 9:00 a.m. sharp! Must pre-register. First 50 to sign-up get a t-shirt.

Recreation Centers:
Kidz Kamp Starts at the Recreation Centers June 1. City’s day camp program for kids ages 6 – 12 is starting. Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sports, games, arts & crafts, field trips, outdoor recreation, fitness and wellness, computers, and activities to promote “Healthy Kids-Happy Kids” Cost: $60.00 per child per two week session. Contact Kim Battle: 643-6052. Camp Sign-Up at Watkins Street All Summer- Parents can still register for the first session of Kidz Kamp during this first week in June. Registration for the whole summer will be on-going Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Parks & Recreation Department Office at 1102 S. Watkins St. Office.

Outdoor Chattanooga & Related Activities:
Downtown Kayak Trips begin June 4.
Outdoor Chattanooga will host downtown kayak excursions on the Tennessee River on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 4 through Aug. 15. Paddle around Maclellan Island, the museum bluffs, and Ross’s Landing. Cost is $35 for adults and $25 for kids ages 8 -13. Sign up for Rapid Learning Whitewater Kids Club Camps for ages 8 to 18.
Beginner Camp: June 15-17.
Beginners spend one day learning & practicing skills locally, then do an overnight and trip down the Hiwassee River. Cost: $200 - includes all gear, instruction, meals, and transportation to and from Greenway Farm.
Intermediate Camp: July 15-17, entirely on area whitewater streams. Cost: $250 with everything included. Contact Marcus Hulsey or Tiffany Ellison at 423 842-6629.

Navy Seals Fitness Day at Warner Park - Thursday, June 11, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
U.S. Navy Seals will be visiting in Chattanooga this week and will provide activities that promote good health, fitness, swimming skills for kids city-wide. Free event includes fitness skills challenge stations, obstacle courses, SEALS swimming exhibitions, and local kids versus the SEALS contests. Call Peggy Grall at 697-1385.

Hershey’s Track & Field Day at Tyner High School Field - Friday, June 12, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Free event for children ages 8 – 13 Participants will compete in a variety of track and field contests. Winners will go to the State Meet in Murfreesboro, TN on June 20. Last year, two local kids went to nationals held in Hershey, Pa.

“River Rat” Open Water Race - Rivermont Park to Coolidge Park - Sat., June 13, at 7:00 a.m.
4h annual open water swimming race down the Tennessee River raises funds for minority lifeguard training and certification. 1.5 and 4.5 mile distances. Awards and lunch for the participants at the Coolidge Park finish line. Contact Peggy Grall at 697-1385.

Youth Rigby Camp June 16, 17, & 18 at Washington Hills Rec. Center
Boys and girls ages 6- 12 will be introduced to the sport of Rugby Flag Football. The free camp will be taught by coaches and members of the Chattanooga Rugby Football Association. 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Call Richard West at 643-6055.

Hank’s Birthday at the Chattanooga Zoo – Saturday, June 20
