Body Of Cleveland Man Killed In Africa To Be Returned Home

The body of a Cleveland, Tn., man who was killed Tuesday morning in the African country of Mauritana will be returned home this weekend.

Christopher Ervin "Chris" Leggett, 39, was shot and killed by two men who tried to kidnap him, but could not overpower him.

He had been in Africa for six years as a humanitarian work and teaching in a low-income neighborhood.

He and his wife, Jackie, have four children. His parents are Jay and Linda Leggett of Glenmore Drive in Cleveland.

He was a 1986 graduate of Cleveland High School. He graduated from UTC in 1990 with a degree in business after attending Cleveland State.

Mr. Leggett was a member of First Baptist Church of Cleveland.

His wife is the daughter of Charles and Shirley Beard of Cleveland.

The couple's four children are Hannah Marie, 15; Jordan Christopher, 13; Haley Rebecca, 12; and Erin Christian, 8.

His brother, Jay Lynn Leggett Jr., works at the Athens Federal Bank in Cleveland.

Al-Qaida is claiming responsibility for the killing.
