Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken is located at 526 E. MLK Blvd.
Blues . . . Brews . . . & Bird – that’s the motto for Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken located at 526 E. MLK Boulevard. Previously at this location was Z Wooden Nickle. I would call Champy’s a “sports-bar-type atmosphere, but family oriented.

Champy’s does not have a large menu, but most of it is homemade! When you go there, you HAVE to start with the homemade hot tamales; six with slaw and crackers for $8.99. Had I known they were so good, I might not have ordered anything else!

In addition to appetizers such as pickled fried green tomatoes and smoked sausage ($7.99 each) they serve some fantastic fried chicken. That’s the menu – appetizers and fried chicken!

The family has a background in owning fried chicken restaurants in Mississippi. Having never been a fan of that other chicken, I think Champy’s is great – crispy on the outside and moist inside, without being greasy. Plates include cole slaw and baked beans, made by the owner, and white bread.

On Saturdays you will find a have a smoker out front on the patio area where they smoke ribs for sale that evening – sold until they are gone. We were told they are $13.99 for a half-slab (about 8 bones) with beans and slaw. Champy’s also hopes to have Crawfish Boils when available.

Plates range from $5.25 for a two-piece dark meat plate to $7.75 for a three-piece white meat plate. Chicken can also be purchased in family size, individual pieces and family meals.

And – you must not leave until you try the fresh Key Lime Pie! Wow! It is probably the best I have ever eaten.

I hope people find Champy’s and give them an opportunity to serve you some of their delicious fried chicken.

Hours for Champy’s are Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM and on Friday and Saturday until ??

Check them out!
