WTCI Airs Annual Capitol Fourth Celebration
posted July 2, 2009

WTCI will be airing the 29th annual A Capitol Fourth program to commemorate our nation’s Independence Day and America’s 233rd birthday. The celebration will air on Saturday at 8 p.m. with an encore presentation at 9:30 p.m.

Hosted by Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Jimmy Smits, the program will include performances by Barry Manilow with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of Washington. Others performing include Aretha Franklin, pop singer Natasha Bedingfield, the cast of Jersey Boys, multi Grammy Award-nominee Michael Feinstein and classical pianist Andrew Von Oeyen. The cast of Sesame Street, including Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch and more, will be on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol with the others to share in the celebration. The Muppets will also perform a musical medley of patriotic tunes.

Coming alive against a background of the White House, the Washington Monument and Lincoln himself will be a powerful display of fireworks. Concluding the firework show will be a rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” including a live canon fire provided by the U.S. Army Presidential Salute Battery. In addition to the performances will be the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, The U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the Armed Forces Color Guard.

The show will be broadcast in front of hundreds of thousands on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, millions at home, on National Public Radio and also to troops on the American Forces Radio and Television Network.
