Photo Story: Matt Diaz Rings David Wright's Bell At Third Base

posted July 19, 2009

In the grand scheme of things, it didn't mean anything since the Mets beat the Braves Saturday, 5-1.

For Mets' fans, it was a scary moment when it appeared that their All-Star third baseman David Wright may be yet another injury on the already decimated Mets' team.

Matt Diaz was on second base and Casey Kotchman on first with no outs in the fifth inning when Kenshin Kawakami attempted a sacrifice bunt. Mets pitcher Johan Santana pounced on the bunt and threw to Wright for a forceout on Diaz.

As the first photo shows, Diaz made a clean slide. He may have expected Wright to come quickly off the bag and throw to first. Diaz, who completed his slide, sent Wright flying on his back.

Wright seems to be thinking or saying, "Now why did you do that?" He was clearly shook up. Wright asked third base umpire Randy Marsh if the play was legit. It was.

Manager Jerry Manuel and the Mets trainer go out to make sure Wright was ok. He was. Wright bent down to stretch and play was resumed.
