Listen up folks. This is important. There's something special going on down in Augusta, Ga., this very week. It's the National Barrel Horse Association World Championships (that's right- I said world) and a quiet blonde girl is doing her best to put this town on the map.
Avery Pettway and "Leather," her equine brother for life, placed sixth in round one in their division and age level and are gunning for all the marbles tomorrow night in the finals. People from Europe, Australia and the whole world over are there competing to be the World Champion in an event where thousandths of a second separate first from tenth place. Having placed sixth in round one and advancing to the finals in such an event means that Avery is among the top one hundred and fifty or so in the entire world. If she shaves several thousandths of a second, she has a legitimate shot at being one of the fastest barrel racers on earth! No kidding! They're going to tape it for television. How many world champions do you know? I don't know any city champions.
If he acts nice, Avery lets this big ugly guy groom, do tack, shovel horse droppage, drive the bus, bank roll and guard her from harm. It's Daniel, her father, and he does his job well. He's unashamedly bursting with pride and how in the world can you blame him? Momma Lynn is beside herself as well and it's a good thing gorgeous Avery took after her because together and in action, Avery and Leather are a sight to behold. It's awesome.
I am lucky to know Avery and her folks and I ask that nobody open any umbrellas inside or let a black cat cross your path even though it's Halloween. I'm gonna say a prayer and cross my fingers too.
Either way, win, lose or draw, we love you Avery Pettway. You go, pretty girl.
