McCallie Crew Takes Four Wins At Secret City Race
by special report to The Chattanoogan
posted November 3, 2009

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- McCallie School rowers travelled here last weekend for the annual Secret City Head Race.

Thirty teams from nine states and 19 cities attended, making it the largest fall regatta ever held here.

Despite cold, wind, and rain, McCallie crews were again able to race successfully and win almost all of their races. McCallie boats won the Heavyweight Varsity 4+, the Lightweight Varsity 4+, the Novice 4+, and the Novice 8+ all in convincing fashion.

In the Varsity 8+, McCallie placed second, a mere .7 seconds behind the winning crew from Cincinnati.

McCallie’s JV placed third, beating all Southeastern varsity programs in attendance. Both the varsity and JV 8’s posted times faster than all of the colleges in attendance despite having just half an hour to rest between the Varsity 4 and
Varsity 8 race.

McCallie’s rowers will return to action Saturday, Nov. 7, in downtown Chattanooga at the Head of the Hooch. This regatta currently ranks as the largest single day of rowing in the United States and will have over 1,750 boats competing. Spectators should go to the Walnut Street Bridge or Ross’ Landing for the best views.
