Tag’s Tavern Gets 3-Day Suspension By Beer Board For Gambling Devices
by Dana Wilbourn
posted November 5, 2009

The Chattanooga Beer Board on Thursday approved a three-day suspension for Tag’s Tavern at 2823 Cummings Highway for having gambling devices on the premises. Chattanooga Police officer John Collins said the vice unit had observed the machines and other gambling paraphernalia and obtained a search warrant which he executed on Oct. 9.

Employee William Lake, who is married to the owner, made no defense of having the machines in the business other than saying they have been there for 15 years and nothing was ever said or done. Police confiscated the four video gaming machines, a large amount of tip boards, and $1,621 in cash.

Board member Doug Daily said the tavern is in his district and he is familiar with its operation. They have an older clientele and have never been found to sell beer to underage patrons, he said, and this is the only infraction they have had.

A motion to suspend the license for three days beginning Monday was approved. Board member Phillip Sallee voted against the motion.

The board usually specifies a suspension to begin on a Thursday to affect the busiest days for an establishment.

In other business, the board approved the following applications for consumer and/or carryout permits:
