Owls Smith Will Miss Playoff Game For Disciplinary Reasons
by special report to The Chattanoogan
posted November 5, 2009

Ooltewah standout Jacquess Smith will miss the Owls' Class 5A state playoff game Friday night due to disciplary reasons.

Smith, who is committed to sign a football scholarship with the University of Tennessee, will miss the home game against No. 7-rannked Knoxville Farragut.

Ooltewah coach Benny Monroe confirmed the suspension on Thursday, and said Smith will be available for the second round if No. 5-ranked Ooltewah advances.

Smith, who plans to sign with Tennessee in February, has 23 tackles for loss this season and 8.5 sacks. He was chosen the state's top prospect by the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Channel 3 Eyewitness News on Thursday afternoon that the punishment stems from an altercation in practice earlier this week.

Smith has not been dismissed from school.

Coach Monroe told the Knoxville News-Sentinel the issue was an "in-house thing."
