Mike Turner Speaks At Chattanooga Democratic Women's Club

The Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women's Club will welcome Representative Mike Turner, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, as its guest speaker for their monthly meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the IBEW Union Hall, 3922 Volunteer Dr., off Bonny Oaks Drive. Representative Turner will address health care reform.

Representative Turner was elected by the people of District 51 in 2000, and served on numerous House committees before he was elected chairman of the Democratic Caucus in 2008. He currently serves on the Finance Committee, the Corrections Oversight Committee, the Health Committee, the Government Operations Committee, the Calendar and Rules Committee, the Ethics Commission, and the Joint Legislative Operations Committee.

Prior to holding political office, Representative Turner was employed with Ford Motor Company, the Davidson County Sheriff's Department, the Davidson County General Sessions Court, and was a Captain-EMT for the Nashville Fire Department. He served as secretary, first vice president, and president of the Nashville Firefighters Association, as a board member of the Tennessee Fire Commission, and as president of the Tennessee Professional Firefighters' Union.

He has also been on the board of the Donelson-Hermitage, Madison, Rivergate, Nashville, and Old Hickory Chambers of Commerce and on the Board of the American Red Cross. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club, Amnesty International, and many environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, Green Peace, Tennessee Conservation Voters, and Tennessee Conservation League. Representative Turner served for 17 years as a member of the AFL-CIO and is presently executive cirector.

Representative Turner is a graduate of Dupont High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University. He and his wife Dinah have three daughters and reside in Old Hickory where they attend the United Methodist Church.
